Finishing the legs
Next, using shims under the legs, I level the seat from side to side and from front to back. Once it's leveled, I mark each leg using the bench top as a reference, so that the seat will tilt the desired amount from front to back. Around 1 inch is comfortable. The legs are then sawn off at these marks.
Measuring off the bench top |
Legs sawn to length |
An upside down plane is clamped in the bench vise |
The legs are run across the plane blade until there's no wobble - note the chamfer |
The plane is at the same height as the bench top - it's easy to make tiny adjustments this way |
Each leg is carefully sliced across the blade - the chamfer helps prevent tearout |
Testing on my table saw top which is very flat |
