Frequently Asked Questions
How much do your chairs cost?
That is an interesting question. I currently have almost no backlog, and am trying to build my chair making business. A year from now when I have a six month backlog, the price will be different than what it is right now. So, I’m not publishing a fixed price list at this time - please contact me for current pricing.
What finishes are available for your chairs?
I typically finish my chairs using milk paint from The Real Milk Paint Co.. Windsor chairs are usually made from 3 different types of wood, so painting them is a nice way of blending the appearances of the different woods. After painting they are oiled and rubbed out to a high gloss finish - the shininess will lessen after a while. Any paint or combination of paints from The Real Milk Paint Co. can be used, for example, black over red is a very popular, attractive, combination. There are many other nice combinations, just ask. I will also apply the oil/varnish finish to an unpainted chair if that is of interest. See Milk Paint.
Do you paint the underside of your chairs?
I follow Peter Galbert’s technique of just oiling the underside of the chair, and leaving it bare wood. I think this looks nicer than painting it, and is a great place for me to wood burn my logo and the date I made the chair. I will wood burn a small inscription on the underside of the chair if asked to do so. For example, if the chairs are a birthday gift, a short birthday message could be added.
Chairs usually go with tables - do you also make tables?
While I’ve made a number of tables over the years I’m not currently offering them. I need to focus on chairs, there is a lot to learn there.
Do you ship chairs?
I will ship chairs anywhere I reasonably can. Contact me for details.
Where does your wood come from?
I source my wood either locally in Bolton, Massachusetts, or from my friends in Vermont.
Which chairmakers do you follow?
These 3 makers are true masters of the craft, and have all been inspirational to me:
There are many highly skilled chairmakers out there - these are just the ones that I have had contact with.
Why should I buy one of your chairs instead one of these makers?
That’s a great question. :)
Every one of these makers produces beautiful work, and you cannot go wrong purchasing chairs from them. Some reasons you might want to choose me anyway:
I’m just starting my chair business. In acknowledgement of this, my prices are lower. I haven’t yet made 100 chairs, I cannot realistically charge the same amount as someone who has made 1000s of chairs. As I gain experience, and if I wind up with a backlog, my prices will naturally rise. Get in on the ground floor!
I currently have almost no lead time. Hopefully this will change. :)
I honestly love building chairs, and I think the end result speaks for itself. My chairs are guaranteed for (my) life, and I will repair or replace anything which goes wrong with them, abuse notwithstanding.
The wood I use in these chairs has a story all its own, which I think is pretty cool. Please read: Where does your wood come from?
Are your chairs guaranteed?
My chairs are guaranteed for (my) life. I want you to be completely happy with your purchase from day one onwards, and will do whatever is necessary to make this so.
Your chairs only feature one style of turning - do you do others?
I currently only sell chairs made with what are known as “Bamboo” or “Double Bobbin” turnings, because I can make these to a standard that I am comfortable selling with a reasonable amount of effort. As soon as I can I will be selling chairs with other styles like “Baluster” turnings.
How do you actually make these chairs?
I’m glad you asked - please see my blog!
