Time to finish the seat carving. The little detail on the side of the seat where it intersects with the back of the seat is both convex and concave, like the inside of a donut but not quite as sharp a curve. It's quite tricky to carve it well - I do the best that I can and it gets better each time.

I use pencil lines to do the layout and then carve the facets with a drawknife. Once all the facets are carved I use a small round spokeshave to fair everything into smooth curves.

The underside carving is now finished. It doesn't remove a lot of wood, and it's a bit difficult, but it really completes the seat. The way these seats look really distinguishes handmade chairs from factory made chairs - this sort of detail just isn't possible in a mass produced chair.
